Sax and Violins: A Fiasco Playset
A downloadable game
The Modern Ear, volume 56
"Avid readers will know this advocate for modern music would sit through anything from In C to 4’33” but this night, dearest music enthusiasts, was one which tested my patience. There is much to be said about the respect for aleatoric music- that is, for the layman, music which is composed through seemingly random means; perhaps numbers ascribed to note durations transform a telephone number into a tantalizing tumultuous rhythm, perhaps the fat bellies of birds on a 5-wire telephone pole become noteheads to a score, or even something as banal and mindless as rolling dice can give you an outcome of what those with self-proclaimed open minds may deem music.
However the FIASCO PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA goes too far! Open mindedness of course in this age of post-modernist, post-contemporary, difficult-to-name capital-N capital-M New Music is much needed but at a certain point that window’s too open and you’re letting in not just violins and Moog synthesizers but geckos palmetto bugs, and trombonists! For the love of Mozart- the thing about classical music is that you have to play the notes that are on the page!
And that doesn’t even mention the chaos before and after that cacophony!
Betrayal, violence, intrigue- murder?!
Why, it’s more than this critic can cover in one review!"
